Children Dentistry

Healthy primary teeth are crucial for development of speech, effective chewing for nutrient absorption, appearance and the overall well-being to help build up their self confidence. We believe that a child's first visit to the dentist office should be a pleasant and fun experience, so as to ensure inculcate good oral hygiene habits for a healthy smile.

The front milk teeth first erupts when the baby is about six months old, and all milk teeth would have erupted when the baby is about 2.5 years old. There is no strict rule as to when a baby should start seeing a dentist for check-up, but it can be as early as one year old. The objective of the baby seeing a dentist in his/her early years is not for treatment but rather to have him/ her experience a visit to the dentist and understand what it is all about. A short visit to the dentist office to interact with the dentist and sit on the dental chair is sufficient to make a pleasant first impression which will impact the child's behaviour for future six-monthly dental check-up and cleaning procedures. It will also make future visits for dental cavity treatment easier for the child and parents.

Fissure Sealant is a special material used by dentists to seal pits and fissures. "Pits" are deep holes and "Fissures" are grooves that can be found on the chewing surfaces of the molar and pre-molar teeth naturally. Food debris and bacteria tend to get into the pits and fissures and are not easily cleaned away by toothbrushing. Decay will then develop and form cavities in the tooth. Fissure sealant is a special material are applied easily and painlessly on the biting surface. No drilling is required. The tooth are properly cleaned, treated, dried, and the sealant applied. It then hardens to form a protective coating over the tooth.

Fissure sealant is recommended for both adults and children. For children, it may be applied for milk molar teeth at about 3-4 years old, first molar teeth at about 6-7 years old, second molar teeth at about 11-13 years old, and incisors between ages 9-13 years old.
